Honouring the Threshold into Adolescence

A meaningful, secular alternative to The Rite of Confirmation

The Coming of Age Ceremony is a powerful rite of passage marking the significant transition from childhood into the threshold of adolescence. It is a beautiful and meaningful moment where we deliberately pause to look back on a unique journey and look forward with anticipation to the adult your child is beginning to grow into.

As a modern parallel to the Christian rite of Confirmation, this ceremony ensures that young people outside of a church community experience that vital sense of milestone and belonging that this age deserves. It is often celebrated during the final year of primary school to ritually mark the transition into secondary school and the new world that awaits.

A Circle of Support
Tailored to your family’s unique story, this ceremony gathers a “village” of family, friends, and mentors to provide a Circle of Support around the young person at the threshold of adolescence. During this phase of life—where a sense of vulnerability is often present— rites that strengthen the young person’s sense of belonging and connection to family and community can be transformative.

Resonant Rituals & Creative Expression
The best and most meaningful rituals for this age are those that resonate with the young person, and into which they have input. This helps to avoid the dreaded “cringe factor.” Creative possibilities include:
The Threshold Crossing: A physical crossing – e.g. across a bridge, a line of stones, or through a gate – to symbolize the crossing over into a new “chapter”. If they love physical activity, we can co-create a demanding threshold crossing hike!
The Wisdom Circle: An opportunity for mentors to share stories, advice or wisdom to encourage and equip the young person as they step forward into a new phase of life.
Casting Away: A symbolic burning or releasing of childhood habits to make room for new growth.
Letters to the Future: The ceremonial sealing of a “Letter to My Future Self” to be opened in years to come.

Often the young person, if they wish to do so, shares who they are becoming through word, a short piece of writing, art, music or through any number of creative avenues. I welcome any unique ideas to adapt, or create custom rituals, to ensure your child is fully at ease and fully buys into the ceremony.

A Setting that Speaks to Them
To ensure the ceremony is authentic, it is vital to involve the young person in choosing the location and the atmosphere. For this to be a true moment of validation, the environment must resonate with them—whether that is the intimacy of your family garden, the wilds of nature, or anywhere in between. If they prefer intimacy, we can keep it quiet and reflective; if they are more adventurous, we can choose a setting that reflects that energy.

Multilingual Options
For international families, I am happy to conduct ceremonies in Portuguese or incorporate elements of French, Spanish, and German (or other languages with a little bit of your guidance) to ensure everyone feels the full warmth of the occasion, no matter what language they speak.

Why Choose a Coming of Age Ceremony?
This joyful ceremony is designed to validate the young person. It bestows a sense of pride and “becoming”, and boosts their confidence and inner strength as they navigate the journey into adulthood.
